Understanding Spiritual Devotion

Devotion is one of the most beautiful qualities in religions (provided it doesn't become distorted into bias and something for the ego to use as an excuse to make war). Most religions require devotion to a Creator God. But how does it work in Buddhism, since there is no notion of a Godhead?
